What Is A Google Page Rank & Why Is It Important?

Google co-founder Larry Page gave his name to a system which allocates a score between Nothing and Ten to every webpage on the internet. This is known as PageRank and is a very useful measuring tool in determining the online importance and impact of any website / webpage.

When the Google Spider (robot) visits a website it applies one of the most complicated algorithms imaginable to assess the relevance of the content it is scanning. In fact there are over 500 million variables which can be taken into account when the GoogleBot is assessing each page.

So Why Is This Important?

Well let’s say there are 100 websites all competing for the term Blue Widgets. The web pages with the highest PageRank will more than likely appear higher on the organic Google search results than those websites with a lower Page Rank.

How Can I See What The PageRank of a Webpage Is?

The easiest way of seeing the Page Rank of any webpage is to have the Google Tool Bar installed on your browser. Once it is installed click on “Options” then click on “Tools” and enable the Page Rank tool.

Google typically update the visible PageRank of webpages about 4 times a year, although in practice this is an ongoing process throughout the year. What is updated is the PageRank displayed on the PageRank tool. The 2nd PageRank update for 2010 has just occurred, so there should be another one due around the beginning of July.

Always be aware of your website’s PageRank and always look for ways of optimising your website to improve your visibility on Google. Make sure you have submitted your website to Google, Bing and Yahoo via their respective online submission forms.

Flash websites are perhaps the WORST candidates for search engine optimisation. So if you have a flash website you will need professional SEO help to achieve any decent level of organic exposure with Google, Bing or Yahoo.
